Sangeet's association with Sanlaap ( a kolkata based devlopmental organisation working for the rights of women and children), in the year 2002. The campaign team at Sanlaap, called up Sangeet to cover the International Child Labour Day as a young journalist. A field trip which facilitated discussion at Red Light Area, Child Labourers, Rag pickers etc... proved to be a turning in my life.
Till now celebrity haunter sangeet, started showing greater interest in social/human interest stories and begun his search for the real world heroes.
Soon he was nominated from Sanlaap to stand for the election of Asian Youth Representative of ECPAT INTERNATIONAL.
During his association with Sanlaap, he led/was involved in the following projects
CAMPAIGN RED ALERT-A campaign asking the citizens of Kolkata to awken to the fact that there are 400000 children forced into prostitution in Calcutta, and they were expolited by the same men, who travel in buses trams taxis or interacted with the any other child. The campaign was launched on 14th of November, Children's Day by a protest walk by school students, children from red ligt areas and others. Binanca Jagger led the walk, with Sangeet as a forefront campaigner.
INTERSECT- is derived from the Latin word ‘inters’ which means cross or cut each other. Intersect programme was a rendezvous for students of mainstream school and students from red light areas. The objective of this programme was to pave the path towards the integration of the youth of the red light areas with students of mainstream schools and colleges.
Due to the covert and avert attempts of the so-called mainstream society, which always tries to keep the youth of the red light areas at bay, they become completely isolated and withdrawn into their own cocoons. This further results in the feelings of insecurity, dilemma, lack of self-confidence, and inferiority complex amongst them and creates barriers for them to mingle with people beyond the boundaries of their red light areas.
The Intersect programme was to demolish these socially constructed boundaries. Am attempt to install in them a sense of belonging to the greater society instead of isolation. The initial activities started in 2002 with a small group and comprised activities of organising programmes to mark the International Women’s Day, Violence against Women fortnight and different workshops, trainings, seminars, rallies on issues of Trafficking, Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, Child rights, Child abuse etc.
Considering theatre to be an effective medium of making a positive impact, the Intersect got together and staged a play “Judhistir er Jua o Aamra” on 27th August 2003. The script of the play was based on the inputs from a workshop organised for that purpose. The final production was preceded by vigorous rehearsal for six months. The production won much acclaim from both the media and the audience and went a long way in narrowing the social divide.
